1. IB program overview

IB program (International Baccalaureate) is a complete program that helps students develop their mind, knowledge, physiques, critical thinking and morality, with subjects in 6 categories:

    • First Language (also known as Language A)
    • Second Language (also known as Language B)
    • Individual and society
    • Science
    • Math
    • Art

Each student will have to pick one subject from each category, apart from the Art category, students can replace with any one of the subject in the other 5 categories.

Each subject will be divided into 2 levels: Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). Students are required to choose at least 3 HL subjects.

All 6 subjects will require the students finish an Internal Assessment that takes up 20-30% of the final score. The score band goes from 1 to 7 mark, with 1 is the lowest and 7 is the highest.

Apart from the 6 compulsory subjects, students are also required to take up 3 side subjects including:

    • 4,000-word Extended Essay (EE)
    • Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
    • 150-hour CAS program (Creative – Activity – Service)

EE and TOK will give students a bonus of 3 extra marks for the final IB overall scores, the maximum overall score in IB course is 45 points.

2. Is doing outside extra IB class necessary?

Along with the IB structure explained above, apart from the vast knowledge and amount of homework of the 6 subjects, IB students will also need to:

    • 6 Internal Assessment for 6 subject: the assessment will vary from presentation to report, essays, research, argumentative work…
    • Extended Essay: this is a 4,000-word essay on topics relating to a subject on certain social aspect.
    • Theory of Knowledge: includes 1 final presentation and a 1,600-word essay on topics in the subject.

IA, EE and TOK are exceedingly tough to the majority of IB students because they are on a different level of difficulty and require a tremendous amount of time for research and preparation.

In reality, IB course is a highly demanding and challenging course, any student that does not possess the ability to learn on their own or have difficulty with their English that could affect their understanding of the subject, it can be hard to achieve a band 6 to 7 for all subjects with only the time at school.

Therefore, engaging in modules and classes outside of school that could assist in doing the subjects more successfully can be crucial. But where to learn? Could that center provide what the students need? These are the questions that should be taken into consideration.

Therefore, it is necessary to study IB after hours at an international education center specializing in exam preparation for IB program. But where to learn IB? Does that IB exam preparation center meet the needs of students? Those are the questions that many parents care about.
