1. A-level program overview

There is a vast difference between IB and A-level program, that is A-level program focuses tremendously on the depth of the subjects, and the students would only need to choose 3 subjects to study for their course.

A-level program lasts for 2 years with 2 levels:

    • First year, it’s called AS-level (or A1-level)
    • Second year, it’s called A-level (or A2-level)

At the end of each year, the school will have a final exam for AS-level and A-level.

There are 67 subjects, divided into 6 categories:

    • Creative and Professional
    • English Language and Literature
    • Humanities and Social Sciences
    • Language
    • Mathematics
    • Sciences

The students are required to do 3 to 4 subjects. There would not be any limit to which subject in which category like IB program, the students are free to choose whichever subjects that best suits their interest. The only requirement is that one subject must in a different category from the others.

    • AS-level: Students study 3 to 4 subjects.
    • A-level: Students pick out 3 subjects that will relate to their future university major from 3 to 4 subjects in AS-level.

Another option that the students could take into consideration after finishing AS-level is the Foundation course, which a preparation course before university. It is entirely required that after AS-level students are to take A-level, various universities still accept this, despite not too many.

There are a total of 7 councils design the program, organize and mark the A-level exam papers. CAIE and LRN councils are for countries outside of the UK. AQA and Edexcel councils operate within and outside the UK. WJEC and CCEA and OCR only operates within the UK.

2. Should the students sign up for an A-level tutor?

Despite the fact that the program requires less subjects than the IB, it does not make the A-level program easier. A-level aims for the students who know surely what major they wish to pursue for university, so the knowledge in the program is very in-depth and highly demanded.

In order to keep up with the depth of the subject, A-level gives out various routes and options that could best fit the students’ future directions and potential.

Furthermore, many subjects in the program measure the students’ ability through course works instead of exam papers. The courseworks often require students to do research and submit a writing on certain topics relating to the subject.

One of the most difficult factors about A-level program is the in-depth knowledge of each subject, therefore seeking for help outside of school has been an interest of the students as well as parents in the recent years. But where to learn A-level? Which A-level exam preparation center can provide what the students need? What should be the level of understanding about the subjects and course from the A-level tutor? These are the questions that should be answered before every consideration.
