ACT COURSE AT INTERTU EDUCATION

ACT test preparation has become increasingly popular among students as an alternative to SAT as ACT puts less emphasis on the assessment of student’s competence of problem-solving but rather existing knowledge past high-school education. Along with SAT, ACT exam is a standardized test widely used by US colleges and universities as an admission requirement for both native and international students alike.

1. Overview of the ACT

Similar to SAT, ACT is a standardized test that many colleges and universities in the U.S utilize as a revered admission standard, which provides a preliminary  assessment of the student’s competence and preparedness to a more challenging environment in higher studies. The better their performance on the test is, the more fitting they are.

ACT test has 5 parts:

    • English
    • Mathematics
    • Reading
    • Science
    • Writing (optional)

Each part will have their respective assessment upon conversion ranging from 1 to 36 marks, with the final grading weighted average of all 4 compulsory parts, which can be directly translated to the range of 1 to 36 marks.

ACT differs from SAT mainly in Science section, of which the core content not purely theoretical knowledge of Physics – Chemistry – Biology, but instead various types of questions regarding data analysis, science-based research, model assessment… This means that as long as students possess fundamental understandings of science, reading comprehension, analytical skills of data presented in distinctive illustrations, they are definitively cut out for success.

2. What kind of challenges do students usually face when prepping for ACT?

Even though the type of content that ACT tests is not rooted in the test taker’s ability to critically think like SAT, it is still not to be taken lightly.

    • Under the immense pressure of time limitation, each question in ACT requires a set amount of finishing time considerably shorter than those of SAT’s.
    • Without decent skill in reading comprehension, in conjunction with the limited amount of test time, even understanding what is being asked can also pose a challenge to test takers.
    • Math section consists of not only questions on Algebra but also Geometry and Trigonometry.
    • English section aims to test the candidate’s skill of language efficiency based on their ability to apply certain grammar points, structure and organize sentences, punctuation…
    • However, Science section is relatively distinctive in comparison to other Test Prep as ACT tests the student’s ability to analyze data presented in graphs, diagrams or research hypotheses…
    • In similarity to Essay section in SAT, Writing section within ACT requires a very much different method of delivery in comparison to other Test Preps, to which students will need time to familiarize and exercise so that they would not go off-topic as easily.
    • Psychological pressure during test preparation.

At Intertu Education, ACT Test Prep instructors help guide learners to quickest and most efficient solutions to any Math problems, reading comprehension techniques that allow for quick and effortless understanding of key ideas, methods to efficient time management through selective information uptake, tips and tricks to a faster completion time via option deduction.

Depending on the score goal compared to the foundation of English and Math knowledge and the determination of each student, you will need different ACT study time. However, with many years of ACT teaching experience, students need the following average length of time:

5.1. For beginners

The average time that students who are not really good at English get used to ACT from the beginning until they are familiar with and master all the question types in all 4 parts usually falls within 5 months with a learning frequency of 3 hours per week. It can be shortened to about 3.5 months if you practice regularly 4.5 hours per week.

5.2. For those who already have foundation

It takes about 2.5 months with 3 hours of study per week for a student with a good background in English and Math to achieve an ACT score of 30 or higher. The teachers will focus on helping students do quick calculations for Mathematics section, quickly grasp the main ideas and get accurate information in Reading section, teach advanced grammar points to get the full score in English section, how to read understand data and tables for Science section…

6. Should self-study ACT or prepare for the ACT at the center?

As mentioned above, ACT is not too focused on reasoning skills like SAT, nor does it have too many difficult vocabulary, so students can completely study ACT at home through ACT sample tests if they have good English and Math skills, but one thing is for sure, it’s extremely difficult to study at home and get a high ACT score.

To get a high ACT score of 32 or higher, it is not simply necessary to have a good foundation in English and study natural subjects, but students also need to be able to read, understand and calculate quickly along with effective test strategies. So where should you study the ACT? At the ACT test preparation centers, teachers have experience in teaching ACT for many years, practice solving ACT problems continuously and update the trend of problem solving regularly, so they will be very familiar with most test types and easily catch the weak points that need to be improved.
