1. What is GRE Test?

GRE Test is a standardized competency assessment administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), which is a prerequisite for admission to graduate programs including Business and Law in the US, Canada, and a number of countries.

GRE has 2 separate exams, GRE General (GRE I) and GRE Subject (GRE II). GRE General assesses candidates’ general ability in issues: Analytical Writing, Language, Mathematics… while GRE Subject tests candidates’ professional knowledge in a specific subject such as Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature in English and Psychology.

Most universities will require GRE General, only highly competitive universities will require candidates to take the GRE Subject related to graduate programs. In this article, when Intertu refers to GRE, it means to refer to GRE General.

GRE scores are valid for 5 years. The total GRE score ranges from 260 to 340 points. This score is calculated as the sum of the 2 sections Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. Analytical Writing section is scored separately. The scores for GRE sections are as follows:

    • Analytical Writing: 0-6
    • Verbal Reasoning: 130-170
    • Quantitative Reasoning: 130-170

2. Is GRE test difficult?

Because it is a standardized graduate certificate, GRE has a very high difficulty, especially Verbal section because this section requires candidates to have a wide academic vocabulary to be able to complete well. GRE requires both language ability and test-taking skills, in general candidates will have difficulty with GRE in the following issues:

    • There are 2 essays on the GRE test, analysis of an issue and analysis of an argument. Both articles require in-depth essay writing skills and rigorous reasoning.
    • Need to cultivate a large academic vocabulary from about 3,000 – 5,000 words for Verbal section in particular and the GRE test in general.
    • Quantitative section includes multiple-choice questions with up to 2 correct answers or more.
    • Except for Analytical Writing, which is definitely the first part of the test, the rest of the sections will appear out of order, which can easily confuse candidates.
    • The difficulty of the GRE test is generally quite high, so it takes a long time to review, making it easy for candidates to get bored and lose motivation.

3. Is studying for GRE at a Test Prep Center necessary?

Self-study GRE requires learners to have a good level of English, at least equivalent to IELTS 7.0 or higher and have a high self-study spirit. Although it is possible to self-study GRE at home with GRE sample tests, but GRE makes it difficult for even native speakers, it is very difficult for someone who only uses English as a second language to practice for the test. Therefore, it is advisable to find a tutor with experience in teaching GRE to guide you on how to study properly and have a detailed study schedule right from the start, even if you have a tutor, it still takes a long time for reviewing GRE.

Teachers at GRE test preparation centers are highly qualified, experienced in GRE teaching for many years, and spend a lot of time practicing and researching test trends, so they will be very familiar with most question types, which there will be a method to guide students on how to study the GRE step by step in the most effective way.

4. How long does it take to fully prepare for GRE?

Different graduate programs will have different score requirements depending on the school’s reputation, but typically schools will require GRE scores between 310 and 320 on average.

It is impossible to determine the exact time to study for GRE because it depends on many factors: score goals, English background, study time that can be spent each day, concentration, determination… In general, GRE is a difficult test and it usually takes candidates at least 6 months or more.

4.1. For candidates with limited English skills

Because GRE needs a certain English background to be able to learn and prepare for the exam, the average time for a new bachelor to start studying the GRE with not very good English ability is usually about 6 months to 1 year.

    • With a target score of 300 to 315: takes at least 6 months with an average of 4.5 hours of study per week.
    • With a target score of 315 or higher: takes about 9 months to 1 year with an average of 4.5 hours of study per week.

4.2. For candidates who are sufficient with the English language

A good English background is a necessary but not necessary condition for achieving a high GRE score even with IELTS 7.5 or higher. As mentioned above, GRE preparation process needs to cultivate about 3,000 – 5,000 more academic words, so good English is only an advantage, candidates still need long enough time to practice to achieve the desired score.

    • With a target score of 310 to 325: takes about 4 months with an average of 4.5 hours of study per week.
    • With a target score of 325 or higher: takes at least 6 months to achieve the score and the closer it is to the maximum score of 340, the longer the review time will take.
