1. What is GMAT Test?

GMAT is a standardized competency test governed by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), serving as an admission prerequisite for Business, Finance and Accounting, Economics and Management post-graduation courses all over the world.

There are 4 sections in GMAT test:

    • Analytical Writing Assessment: 0-6 marks
    • Integrated Reasoning: 1-8 marks
    • Verbal Reasoning: 6-51 marks
    • Quantitative Reasoning: 6-51 marks

GMAT certificate remains valid within 5 years after the awarded date, and it’s official score band ranges from 200-800 and is converted from the markings of Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. GMAT is an adaptive test, meaning the difficulty rating of each consecutive question is predominantly determined by the correctness of the answer of the preceding question, which implies that higher scores can be expected upon the number of correct answers to more difficult questions.

2. Is studying for GMAT any difficult?

If GRE prides itself in it’s high difficulty rating in vocabulary in it’s Verbal section, GMAT challengingly tests the candidate’s ability to critically think and scientific processing in both it’s Verbal and Quantitative sections. Some of the more challenging parts found in the 2 said sections include:

2.1. Quantitative section:

    • Deeper knowledge and more formulas in Math in comparison to GRE.
    • Problem Solving: GMAT Math questions are sometimes complicated and may cause confusion while also being quite time-consuming in order to find the correct answer.
    • Data Sufficiency: The candidate is given 1 question with 2 data statements and is required to determined which option best fits the statement question and the given data.

2.2. Verbal section:

    • Sentence Correction: Tests for concrete grammatical understanding of English language to successfully correct faulty sentences.
    • Critical Reasoning: The candidate is given a statement, a point of argument and a hypothesis and is required to critically think and organize their response to which statement best fits the statement question.

Being the general admission assessment to the education and training of future business managers, GMAT tests candidates for their high accuracy in using vocabularies and structuring of English language in Sentence Correction (Verbal), along with the ability to critically analyze in Critical Reasoning (Verbal) and Data Sufficiency (Quantitative).

3. Is studying for GMAT at a Test Prep Center necessary?

There’s only a selected few that are academically well-rounded, however, GMAT aims to test the candidate’s qualification in Language efficiency and Mathematical calculations in order to achieve desirable scores. In reality, fresh university graduates with majors in Accounting/Auditing and/or Finance may find themselves being rather advantageous in Quantitative section. Moreover, those that graduate with a major in Business Administration or Management tend to find Verbal section to be easier. Thus, even though self-study for GMAT is completely viable, it would be rather difficult to score high in sections where you are not particularly strong, which can also affect the final score.

Similarly to GRE, GMAT requires a certain level of English efficiency to independently study for with success from the candidate using online GMAT materials. However, no matter how efficient you are  at English language, GMAT-style standardized assessments are far from similar to pure language efficiency tests like IELTS or TOEFL, instead there are questions to test candidate’s analytical skill and logical thinking. Alas, students tend to come to GMAT test prep centers to seek help on how to best prepare for their examination, with detailed study course and learning methods to help save valuable time and money in comparison to finding the proper way to do it themselves.

Instructors at Test Prep centers have years of experience and a high level of expertise in preparing students for GMAT. Additionally, being to familiarized with the GMAT itself, instructors can help analyze and correct points of error in different students in different sections with the most suitable and tailored approach to sufficiently achieve their desired GMAT scores in the shortest amount of time.

4. How long does it take to fully prepare for GMAT?

It is practically impossible to tell the exact amount of time needed one should expect to prepare for GMAT due to the many factors that are present:

    • Target score band
    • Amount of time spent revising every day
    • Initial English Language efficiency
    • Learning capability
    • Determination and resilience

Generally speaking, GMAT is a challenging test and in order to score high, candidates can expect 4 months of revision at least.

4.1. For candidates with limited English skills

An average fresh graduate that just start to prepare for GMAT, with his/her limited English skills, will need around 6 months to 1 year to fully prepare, as Verbal section alone can take up most of their revision time.

    • With a target score band of 550-600: requires at least 6 months of preparation with 4,5 hours of prep work each week.
    • With a target score band of 600-650: requires at least 9 months to 1 year of preparation with 3 to 4,5 hours of prep work each week.

4.2. For candidates who are sufficient with the English language

Possessing good English skills is obviously a tremendous advantage to 2 smaller sections of Reading Comprehension and Sentence Correction in Verbal, however, even with set advantage, it can still be expectable that a revision period may take up at least 4 months as previously mentioned for those who wish to score high. Inherently, GMAT doesn’t only serve as an English efficiency test but also a test on the ability to critically think and analyze accordingly.

    • With a target score band of 550 – 600: requires at least 4 months of preparation with 4,5 hours of prep work each week.
    • With a target score band of 650 – 700: requires at least 4 months of preparation with 6 hours of prep work each week.
    • With a target score band of 700 – 750: requires at least 6 months of preparation with 6 hours of prep work each week on high determination and sheer will.

GMAT is an adaptive test, which means that if you answer the previous question correctly, the next question will be more difficult, and subsequently, you can expect to get more scores if you answer it correctly. On the other hand, if you either consistently give wrong answers or only get easy questions correct, your projected score may not be as expected. Upon reaching the upper limit scores of GMAT, the harder it is to score even higher as it will require the candidate to answer more types of questions perfectly so as to ensure that the upcoming questions become more challenging, which directly translates to higher weighted mark per challenging question answered. Almost getting a GMAT score of 760 or higher is extremely difficult for most candidates both in Vietnam and around the world.
