Summary of GMAT preparation materials for reference

GMAT is a standardized competency assessment administered by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), for bachelors who want to apply to MBA programs of universities around the world. GMAT is also a condition for admission to graduate programs including Economics, Business, Finance, Accounting, Management…

GMAT test consists of four parts: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment, and Integrated Reasoning.

GMAT exam is more about logical and analytical thinking, essential skills for a manager. Therefore, all of the above programs require GMAT certificate as an entry criterion to assess the candidate’s ability to succeed in the study process.

1. GMAT preparation materials by section

1.1. GMAT Quantitative preparation materials

    • GMAT Math Workbook (Kaplan)
    • GMAT All The Quant (Manhattan)
    • GMAT Quantitative Strategy Guide Set (Manhattan)
    • GMAT Club Math Book
    • GMAT Advanced Quant

GMAT is not a Math exam, so Quantitative only includes basic Math knowledge. However, because of its simplicity, you are also easy to fall into the trap in the problem. If you still have the knowledge and need to prepare for the exam quickly, Kaplan’s GMAT Math Workbook will be suitable, but this book still lacks probability and combinatorics.

If you have a lot of time to prepare for the exam, read the entire GMAT Quantitative Strategy Guide Set by Manhattan which includes Fractions, Decimals, Percent, Algebra, Word Problems, Geometry, Number Properties… One thing to keep in mind is that because the books are quite long, so read the next book, you may forget some of the content in the previous book. In addition, GMAT Club Math Book or GMAT Advanced Quant are all books worth reading.

The GMAT test is not allowed to use calculators for the Quantitative section, so you need to practice mental math quickly to avoid spending a lot of time on each question in this section to be on time for the whole test.

Manhattan’s GMAT Prep Sentence Correction is the highest rated book in this category. Because it is quite detailed, it is not easy to absorb all the knowledge, so read GMAT Club Grammar Book first, which will help you master the grammar and question types, and then read this book.

1.3. GMAT Integrated Reasoning materials

    • GMAT Prep Integrated Reasoning Essay (Manhattan)
    • GMAT Pill Integrated Reasoning

Integrated Reasoning is the part that takes its own points and is considered as a secondary criterion, so the document does not need too much. Just read through a few books like the above, you will understand the types of questions in this exam.

1.4. GMAT Analytical Writing materials

    • GMAT Prep Reading Comprehension 6th Edition (Manhattan)
    • GMAT Analytical Writing: Solutions to the Real Argument Topics (Vibrant)

Also a separate scoring test, Analytical Writing does not require candidates to practice as much as Writing in IELTS, but you still have to know the exam questions and how to write them. If you carefully review the questions and sample essays in the books above, it is entirely possible to get at least 4 out of 6 maximum points.

After you have reviewed the exam preparation materials for each section, full GMAT preparation materials are the next step. In general, the above books are highly appreciated not only by GMAT candidates in Vietnam but also around the world for their high applicability and as close to the official test as possible. As for problem solving, the more you practice, the better you’ll get used to the structure and feel like you did in the real exam.

3. Free online GMAT preparation sites

Currently, the form of online exam preparation on websites is increasingly popular because of its convenience. GMAT exam is taken by computer, online exam preparation is also more effective than paper-based. When it comes to preparation, the official exam website is always the most reputable source. The rest of the sites are also free but equally effective.

Above is a collection of materials to help you improve your GMAT score quickly. However, candidates should also note that GMAT is an adaptive algorithm exam, which means that the difficulty of the questions will increase or decrease depending on the previous answers. The questions in the materials are almost impossible to simulate completely and the difficulty is not as high as the real exam. If self-studying GMAT at home, candidates need to refer to other experienced self-studying GMAT people and must spend a lot of time and make a reasonable plan to have the best preparation process. 

Note that the GMAT exam is completely in English, so during the preparation process you should not use Vietnamese GMAT exam preparation materials, this makes you dependent and difficult to progress during your learning.
