1. What is the structure of GED exam?
GED is divided into 4 exams, including Math, English, Social Studies and Science, specifically as follows:
-
- Mathematical Reasoning: The test covers basic math, geometry, basic algebra, graphs and functions, and is divided into two parts, each consisting of 25 questions, in which the second part allows the use of a calculator, calculator reference table and math formula sheet. The total time for the 2 sections of 50 questions is 115 minutes, excluding the rest time between the 2 sections.
- Reasoning Through Language Arts: The test includes reading comprehension, identification and sentence formation, grammar and language, and consists of 3 parts of reading comprehension and 1 part of writing. Total time for reading comprehension is 150 minutes and writing is 45 minutes.
- Social Studies: The test covers the implications of social research, analysis of historical events and arguments in social research, and the use of figures and charts for related topics. The test time is 70 minutes continuously.
- Science: The test covers the design and interpretation of science experiments and the use of numbers and diagrams. The test time is 90 minutes continuously.
2. What difficulties do students often have with the GED?
Usually, the difficulties that candidates face lie in the structure of the test and the wide range of knowledge that the test requires. Each GED test has very little time to work, and candidates typically have to complete 35-40 questions per test in 70 to 150 minutes depending on the subject.
Therefore, if candidates are not used to taking the test under short pressure, the GED exams will become very difficult. In addition, there is also an opinion that the GED test is more difficult than similar tests in the US. Freelance candidates who do not have a solid foundation of knowledge will face many difficulties to pass this exam.

Candidates who have a solid foundation in the content tested in the 4 exams can self-study at home and achieve high results. However, GED is a difficult exam if students do not have a clear preparation and study plan.
To score well on the GED, students must be familiar with the content of the GED, how to study, and how to do the types of exercises. Important skills such as recognizing the type of exercise, limiting errors, or controlling time are all necessary to achieve high results. Therefore, self-study at home will be quite difficult for many candidates, if students still lack the above skills.
