1. A-level Math

Math is one of the most popular subjects, as well as one of the most difficult subjects in the Cambridge A-level program. A-level Math has 3 main sections: Pure Math, Mechanics and Statistics. This makes students feel like they are facing 3 separate subjects.

Math of the A-level program includes 2 subjects, A-level Math and A-level Further Math. A-level Math is the basic Math, students will be familiar with different concepts in the 3 sections above. Meanwhile, A-level Further Math students must learn all A-level Math content plus in-depth knowledge that they have never encountered in IGCSE such as complex numbers, inverse trigonometric functions, matrices… This is the subject only for those who have passion and orientation to study Math in the future.

2. A-level Physics

Physics is the second subject in the list of typical A-level subjects because of its high applicability in life as well as its relevance to many university majors. The subject focuses on the study of matter and its motion in space and time.

In the AS Level year, students will learn general knowledge including motion, pressure, measurement… But by the final year of A-level, the amount of knowledge will be more difficult with topics such as ultrasound, thermal sensors, gravity fields… For students who are oriented to become aeronautical, nuclear or research engineers, A-level Physics is a must-learn subject.

3. A-level Chemistry

As a basic subject, not only A-level program but also educational programs around the world have Chemistry. A-level Chemistry knowledge is divided into 6 topics with contents including Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.

The topics of A-level Chemistry are diverse and closely linked, requiring students to understand the topic well before they can learn the following knowledge. You must also have English skills and technical terminology to solve the questions in the exam. With Chemistry, in addition to the theory test, you need to take a practical test, or a simulation test instead.

4. A-level Biology

In the Cambridge A-level program, if students choose Chemistry, they will usually also study Biology. This is a subject that requires students to acquire a large number of specialized vocabulary. However, if you are interested in the ecology or biotechnology, you can completely study A-level Biology.

A-level Biology revolves around topics such as cells, DNA and genetics, biochemical reactions, living organisms and ecosystems, natural selection… These are all topics covered in the curriculum of IGCSE, but when reaching A-level, the difficulty will be raised to create a solid foundation and best prepare students for entering higher education.

5. A-level Economics

The last subject that is indispensable in this list is A-level Economics, a very strange subject compared to the Vietnamese high school curriculum. If in Vietnam, Economics is a university-level subject, then according to the English program, this subject has been taught from the IGCSE program of grades 9 – 10, but Economics in the A-level program will be intensive and much more complicated.

A-level Economics covers the main topics of microeconomics, macroeconomics and international trade. Students will study economic actors, supply and demand and price systems, government policies and interventions, international trade agreements… to help students see the big picture of economy and understand its impact on individuals, businesses, and countries.

Above is a list of typical subjects of the A-level program. Whether it is a typical subject or a subject few people choose, you also need to base on your interests and abilities to choose the most suitable subject.
