ITT – A mistake that parents often make is the confusion between IB and IGCSE programs. So what are the differences between IB and IGCSE? Related posts: IB is for students age 3 – 19 and does not have a formal exam. Instead, IB is verified according to the grade point of the final year students and certification for students meeting the required standards. The score scale is from 0 to 7, with 7 being the highest. IGCSE is for students age 14 – 16 and is tested under the instructions of Cambridge International Exams (CIE). It is a degree based on individual subjects, meaning one person receives an IGCSE qualification for each subject. The scale of letters from A* to G, where G is the lowest. The differences between IB and IGCSE lie in the learning process. When studying IB, students are allowed to choose 6 subjects and accumulate CAS, EE, and TOK points. Each subject in the IB program is divided into 2 levels: Standard Level (SL) and High Level (HL).
  • For SL level: The program is designed to best suit the level of most students.
  • For HL level: The program includes knowledge in SL level and additional advanced knowledge, for higher academic levels.

Meanwhile, IGCSE has a 2-year study period, with more than 70 subjects, each student can choose from 6 to 9 subjects depending on their abilities and interests. Each subject in the IGCSE program is divided into 2 levels: Core and Extended.
  • For Core level: The program is designed to best suit the level of most students, primarily teaching the most basic knowledge.
  • For Extended level: The program includes knowledge in the Core level and additional advanced knowledge, for higher academic levels and close to higher levels of study such as IB, AP, A-level…
Those are the differences between IB and IGCSE. In addition, the way to divide the study schedule is also different as follows:
  • IB program:
    • PYP (3-12 years old)
    • MYP (11-16 years old)
    • IBDP (16-19 years old)
  • IGCSE program:
    • Cambridge Primary (5-11 years old)
    • Cambridge Secondary 1 (11-14 years old)
    • Cambridge Secondary 2 (14-16 years old)
