Frequently Asked Questions About

IGCSE English as a Second Language

Both subjects are for students for whom English is not their first language and who have a certain existing foundation. ESL (0510/0511) is generally considered to have a balanced focus on both communicative and academic skills, aiming to prepare students to use English effectively in various environments, including studying other subjects in English. EAL (0472) particularly emphasizes building confidence and communicative competence in diverse real-life situations. Students should check the specific requirements of their school or future orientation to choose the appropriate subject.
No. IGCSE ESL requires students to have existing English knowledge and skills at a basic intermediate level (typically equivalent to A2-B1 according to the CEFR framework). The course is designed to help students improve their proficiency to B1-B2.
This depends on the subject code and the regulations of the examination board/school. For example, for Cambridge IGCSE ESL code 0510, the Speaking test is optional (Speaking Endorsement), and the result is not included in the overall A*-G grade but is reported separately. For code 0511 (graded 9-1), the Speaking test is compulsory and is weighted in the overall grade. Students need to check the specific syllabus they are following.
The course focuses on common task types found in the examination, including: Listening comprehension (information filling, question answering, matching...), Reading comprehension (identifying main ideas, specific information, author's attitude from various text types), and Writing (writing summaries, formal and informal letters/emails, articles or reports based on given information). Speaking skills (if taking the component) are also practiced through interactive activities.
It is very beneficial. One of the main objectives of IGCSE ESL is to equip students with the necessary language proficiency to effectively understand lectures, read materials, write assignments, and participate in discussions in other subjects taught entirely in English at the IGCSE, IB, or A-Level.
