It differs from Language A (for native speakers or equivalent proficiency, focusing on literature and advanced language study) and Ab Initio (for complete beginners in that language).

What is the main difference between Language B Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL)?

Both SL and HL aim to develop communication proficiency and intercultural understanding through 5 core themes. However, HL requires a higher level of language proficiency, demonstrated by students having to read and analyze two literary works written in the target language. The demands for complexity and depth in HL's skills assessments (especially Speaking and Writing) are also higher than in SL.
