SACE EAL (English as an Additional Language) is a specialized English subject in the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) program, designed specifically for students for whom English is a second or additional language. As a compulsory subject required for obtaining an ATAR score, SACE EAL plays a vital role in developing students’ English proficiency to an academic level, enabling them to succeed not only in this subject but also across all other subjects taught in English, and preparing them for the university environment.

SACE EAL

Typically, students are eligible to take EAL if their total time studying in schools where English is the main language of instruction is less than five years. Final eligibility decisions are made by the SACE Board based on each student’s language and educational background.
SACE EAL is not “easier,” but it is structured differently to meet the unique needs of EAL learners. It is still a challenging Stage 2 subject, but the assessment criteria and selected texts are tailored to focus more on language development alongside analytical skills.
Yes. SACE EAL is a recognized Stage 2 English subject and fulfills the compulsory requirement to be included in the ATAR calculation. Its score is scaled in the same way as other SACE subjects to ensure fairness.
Assessment usually includes School-Based Assessment (Folio – a collection of written tasks) and an External Examination, which may involve analytical and comparative essays.
