The course goes beyond theory to place special emphasis on the interactive relationship between science, technology, society, and the environment (STSE). Students are encouraged to develop their scientific investigation skills by independently planning and conducting experiments and research to solve practical problems.

Common Challenges When Learning OSSD Science

Difficulty in connecting interdisciplinary knowledge: Requires applying integrated knowledge from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to analyze an environmental or technological issue.
Challenge with scientific investigation and reporting skills: Demands the ability to design experiments, analyze data, and write academic-standard lab reports.

How is OSSD Science graded?

Similar to other subjects in the OSSD program, the final grade for Science is calculated based on 70% from assignments, projects, lab reports, and tests throughout the course, and 30% from the final exam. This demands consistent effort from the student.

Does my child have to study all three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology?

The OSSD program offers separate courses for each subject: Biology (SBI3U/4U), Chemistry (SCH3U/4U), and Physics (SPH3U/4U). Students can choose to study one or more subjects depending on their interests and the requirements of their intended university major.

What is "STSE" (Science, Technology, Society, and Environment)?

STSE is a core component of the Ontario science curriculum. It focuses on helping students analyze and evaluate the impacts of science and technology on society and the environment, thereby fostering the awareness of a responsible global citizen.

How does OSSD Science differ from IB or A-Level Science?

The biggest difference is OSSD's continuous assessment model (70/30), which helps reduce the pressure of high-stakes final exams compared to IB and A-Level. Additionally, OSSD Science places a special emphasis on interdisciplinary issues and practical applications through the STSE component.
