Frequently Asked Questions About

IB Geography

IB Geography is an integrated subject that emphasizes the interaction between humans and the environment. Both the core and optional themes combine elements of both physical geography (e.g., climate, landforms, ecosystems) and human geography (e.g., population, urbanization, economic development, culture), examining them in relation to one another.
Both SL and HL cover the core content ("Geographic perspectives – global change") and complete the Internal Assessment (IA - Fieldwork). However, HL students must also study an extended topic on global interactions ("Global interactions") and research optional themes at a deeper level. Consequently, the HL final exam includes Paper 3, which assesses in-depth knowledge and higher-level analytical skills.
Traditionally and as recommended by the IBO, the Geography IA is a report based on fieldwork independently conducted by the student. However, in some special circumstances or according to updated guidelines, the use of secondary data or alternative research methods may be accepted. The core of the IA is for students to formulate a research question, collect/process data, and present their findings scientifically.
Key skills include spatial thinking, the ability to read, analyze, and interpret various types of maps, diagrams, and statistics; research skills (including planning, data collection, and processing); critical thinking to evaluate complex global issues from multiple perspectives; and the ability to write clear, structured essays and reports using precise geographical terminology.
IB Geography provides a broad foundation of knowledge and skills highly beneficial for many fields of study, including Environmental Science, Urban and Regional Planning, Sustainable Development Studies, International Relations, Economics, Tourism and Hospitality, Natural Resource Management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and other Social Sciences.
