The SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) is an admissions test administered by the Secondary School Admission Test Board (SSATB) in the United States, providing a standardized measure for students from grades 3 to 11. There are three levels: Elementary Level for students in grades 3-4 applying for grades 4-5; Middle Level for students in grades 5-7 applying for grades 6-8; and Upper Level for students in grades 8-11 applying for grades 9-12 or post-secondary. The average time for effective SSAT test preparation to achieve high scores typically ranges from 3 to 6 months, depending on the student’s current proficiency and goals.

Common Challenges When Preparing For Exams SSAT

Verbal Vocabulary Difficulty: Mastering thousands of academic words and complex word relationships, especially in the Synonyms and Analogies sections.
Reading Comprehension Challenges: Demands high reading speed, deep analytical skills, and the ability to infer subtle meanings from passages diverse in topic and style.

How are SSAT scores calculated and reported?

SSAT scores are reported on a unique scale for each section (Verbal, Quantitative, Reading) and as a total score. More importantly, results include a percentile rank, which compares the student's score to a reference group of test-takers (same age, gender) over the past three years in the US and Canada.

Does the Writing Sample in the SSAT count towards the total score?

The Writing Sample is not scored and does not contribute to the total SSAT score. However, a copy of the essay is sent directly to the schools to which the student applies, allowing them to evaluate the student's writing ability, critical thinking, and expression.

What is the main difference between the SSAT and ISEE?

Both the SSAT and ISEE are popular entrance exams for private and boarding schools in the US. The SSAT's Verbal section typically focuses more heavily on vocabulary (synonyms) and analogy questions, while the ISEE's math and reading comprehension question structures can be slightly different. Most schools accept either of these tests.

Why is the SSAT Verbal section considered a major challenge for many students?

The SSAT Verbal section, especially at the Middle and Upper Levels, requires a very broad and deep vocabulary, including words less common in daily communication. Additionally, the Analogies section demands the ability to identify and analyze subtle logical relationships between word pairs.

Are students allowed to use a calculator in the SSAT Quantitative section?

No. According to SSATB regulations, students are not allowed to use calculators in any part of the SSAT exam, including both Quantitative sections. All calculations must be performed manually or mentally.
