The GRE (Graduate Record Examination), administered by ETS, is a crucial standardized test for admission to postgraduate programs (Master’s, Ph.D.) in the US and many other countries, including some MBA programs. Since September 2023, the GRE General Test has been significantly shortened (under 2 hours), focusing on assessing three key skills: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing (one “Analyze an Argument” essay). 1.3 Discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take

1.4 Discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument

1.5 Discuss what questions would need to be answered to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable

1.6 Discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanations can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument

1.7 Examine the stated or unstated assumptions of the argument

What are the main changes to the new GRE General Test (effective September 2023)?

The test is significantly shorter (under 2 hours), eliminates the "Analyze an Issue" essay (leaving only one "Analyze an Argument" essay), reduces the number of questions in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections, and removes the unscored section as well as the optional break.

What is the structure and scoring of the current GRE General Test?

It consists of three main sections: Verbal Reasoning (typically 2 sections, scored 130-170), Quantitative Reasoning (typically 2 sections, scored 130-170), and Analytical Writing (one "Analyze an Argument" essay, scored 0-6 in 0.5-point increments).

The Analytical Writing section now only has one essay. What are the specific requirements?

That's right. Test-takers will be asked to analyze a given argument, evaluate its logic, identify underlying assumptions, and point out what evidence or reasoning could strengthen or weaken that argument.

Can a calculator be used in the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE?

Yes. For the computer-based GRE General Test, an on-screen calculator with basic functions will be provided for the Quantitative Reasoning section.

Should I choose GRE or GMAT if I want to apply to business programs (MBA)?

Most leading business schools now accept both test scores. The GRE is often considered to have a more flexible Quantitative section and a Verbal section that focuses on a broad vocabulary, while the GMAT features a distinct Data Insights section (formerly Integrated Reasoning).
