What are the main differences between the GMAT Focus Edition and the old GMAT version?

The GMAT Focus Edition (from 2023) is shorter, now only has 3 sections (Quantitative, Verbal, Data Insights), eliminates the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) essay, and integrates a portion of the old Integrated Reasoning into the new Data Insights section. Test-takers can bookmark questions, review, and change answers within each section.

What does the new Data Insights section in the GMAT Focus Edition assess?

Data Insights assesses the ability to analyze and interpret data from various sources (graphs, tables, text) to make data-driven decisions. It combines skills from the former Integrated Reasoning section and part of the old Quantitative section's Data Sufficiency.

If the GMAT Focus Edition no longer has an Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) essay, is writing skill still important?

Although there isn't a separate AWA exam, clear and logical writing and communication skills remain extremely important for writing personal essays (Statement of Purpose/Essays) in MBA applications and throughout future academic and professional careers.

Is a calculator allowed in the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GMAT Focus?

No. Test-takers are not permitted to use a calculator in the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GMAT Focus Edition. All calculations must be performed manually or mentally.
