The ACT (American College Test) is a widely used standardized test for university admissions in the United States, often seen as an alternative to the SAT. The ACT assesses students’ academic knowledge and skills across four compulsory sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Additionally, there is an optional Writing section. ACT preparation helps students systematically review knowledge from foundational to advanced levels, familiarize themselves with the test structure, and develop the confidence needed to achieve their study abroad goals.

Common Challenges When Preparing For Exams ACT

Difficulties with Strict Time Pressure: Candidates must complete a large number of questions within each section under very limited time, demanding high speed and efficiency.
Challenges with the Science Reasoning Section: This section requires quick data and graph analysis skills, along with the ability to interpret scientific information rapidly, rather than just in-depth specialized knowledge.

How does the ACT primarily differ from the SAT?

The ACT has a separate Science section, and the English, Math, and Reading sections have distinct question types and time allocations compared to the SAT. The ACT is generally considered to test knowledge learned in school more directly, while the SAT (especially the Digital SAT) might focus more on reasoning and application skills.

How is the ACT scored?

Each compulsory section (English, Math, Reading, Science) is scored on a scale of 1-36. The Composite Score is the average of these four sections, also on a scale of 1-36. The optional Writing section has its own score scale from 2-12.

Is the ACT Writing section mandatory, and how do universities use it?

The ACT Writing section is optional. A small number of universities may require or recommend submitting Writing scores as part of the application to assess students' analytical and argumentative writing skills.

Does the Science section in the ACT truly test in-depth scientific knowledge?

Not entirely. The ACT Science section primarily assesses the ability to interpret, analyze, evaluate models/experiments, and solve problems based on provided scientific passages, graphs, and data tables. It does not test specific scientific knowledge in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.

Are students allowed to use a calculator in the ACT Math section?

Yes. Students are permitted to use a calculator for all 60 questions in the ACT Math section. However, it's important to be aware of the list of approved and prohibited calculators according to ACT regulations.
