Frequently Asked Questions About

Key Stage 3 Science

This is the Science program under the National Curriculum for England for students aged 11-14 (equivalent to Years 7, 8, and 9). The program covers more in-depth knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, serving as a direct foundation for the IGCSE/GCSE examinations.
If the Primary level focuses on observation and description, Key Stage 3 shifts to investigation and explanation. Students are required to plan experiments systematically, analyze data more formally, and use scientific models to explain "why" phenomena occur.
While there may not be a separate practical exam, the written papers heavily assess scientific enquiry skills. Questions will require students to interpret results from a given experiment, suggest improvements to a method, or plan an investigation.
Teachers at Intertu will help your child see the relevance of science to real life (e.g., Chemistry in cooking, Physics in sports). By connecting with what they already know and enjoy, we will spark their curiosity and make science more accessible and interesting.
At this level, it is a more formal process that includes: asking scientific questions, planning a controlled experiment, collecting and presenting data systematically, analyzing evidence, and evaluating the entire investigative process.
Key Stage 3 is designed to cover all the foundational knowledge and, more importantly, the scientific thinking skills necessary for the IGCSE program. A strong foundation in Key Stage 3 is the best preparation for students to succeed in IGCSE.
