Frequently Asked Questions About

Key Stage 1 English

This is the English program under the National Curriculum for England for children aged 5-7 (equivalent to Years 1 and 2). The program focuses on building foundational literacy skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Everyday conversational English is different from academic English. This course helps build formal and structured language skills, including deep reading comprehension, grammatically correct writing, and text analysis – skills that are essential for school.
Phonics is a method of teaching reading based on the relationship between sounds and letters or groups of letters. It is the most basic foundational brick that helps children read and write fluently and accurately in English.
To nurture a love for reading, the program uses a variety of age-appropriate texts, including picture storybooks, simple stories, poems, and basic non-fiction texts.
We use dynamic teaching methods through storytelling, role-playing, songs, rhymes, and interactive games. This helps make learning vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation fun and memorable for children.
A strong literacy foundation in Key Stage 1 is extremely important. It ensures that a child can "read to learn" instead of just "learn to read," an essential skill for success in all subjects in Key Stage 2 and higher levels.
