Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About

IGCSE Geography

blank
IGCSE Geography is a balanced subject that integrates both fields. The curriculum includes topics from Physical Geography (such as river processes, coastal processes, weather, climate, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc.) and Human Geography (such as population, migration, urbanization, economic development, agriculture, industry, etc.). More importantly, the subject emphasizes the interaction between humans and the environment.
Geographical Skills, especially the ability to read, interpret, analyze, and use various types of maps (topographic maps, thematic maps, etc.), charts, graphs, satellite images, and statistical data, are extremely important. This is a core part of the subject and is often tested in a separate Map Skills paper or integrated into other examination papers.
Fieldwork is an important and strongly encouraged component of IGCSE Geography as it helps students apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations and develop investigative skills. The assessment of fieldwork skills may be conducted through a separate paper (e.g., Cambridge's Paper 4), coursework, or an Alternative to Coursework/Fieldwork paper. The specific format depends on the examination board's regulations and the school's choice.
The subject does not require prior specialized knowledge, but a good foundation in English reading comprehension, observational skills, basic logical thinking, and some general awareness of social and environmental issues will be very helpful. Basic mathematical skills (such as reading charts and simple calculations) are also necessary for data analysis.
IGCSE Geography provides a very solid foundation of knowledge and skills for continuing to study Geography at the IB or A-Level. Students will become familiar with core geographical topics, develop map skills, data analysis, spatial thinking, and research skills – all of which are important requirements at higher levels.
