Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About

IGCSE Chemistry

blank
IGCSE Chemistry requires students to have good calculation skills, particularly the ability to work with ratios, solve basic algebraic equations, and handle data accurately. A solid mathematical foundation will help students effectively solve problems related to chemical calculations (Stoichiometry), solution concentrations, reaction rates, and other quantitative parts.
Studying IGCSE Chemistry as a separate science subject (Separate Science) provides much broader and more detailed knowledge than the Chemistry component taught in Combined or Co-ordinated Science programs (which are usually Double Award). It covers more topics and goes deeper into each topic, serving as better preparation for those who wish to pursue Chemistry at the IB or A-Level.
Practical work is an indispensable and very important part of IGCSE Chemistry. Students need to develop safe and accurate experimental skills, including planning experiments, using apparatus, observing, measuring, recording results, and drawing conclusions. Practical skills are assessed through a separate paper (Practical Paper or Alternative to Practical).
Topics that often require more effort include the mole concept and related chemical calculation problems (stoichiometry), theories of chemical bonding and molecular structure, chemical equilibrium, electrochemical processes, and particularly, Organic Chemistry with its nomenclature systems and diverse types of reactions.
This is a core subject and often a prerequisite or highly preferred for a wide range of science and engineering fields, including Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Biotechnology, Materials Science, Environmental Science, Food Science, Geology, and other natural sciences.
