Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About

IB language A: Literature (Vietnamese/English/French/Spanish)

Language A: Literature is designed for students with a high level of proficiency in the target language (e.g., native speakers or equivalent), with the sole focus on the study and analysis of literary works. It differs from Language A: Language & Literature (which studies both literary and non-literary texts/language forms) and Language B (for those learning the language as a foreign language).
Both levels require advanced literary analysis skills. However, HL demands students to study a greater number of works, including both translated and original texts, with a higher level of analysis and more complex critical argumentation. Most importantly, HL students must complete an HL Essay, which is an independent literary research essay, a requirement not present for SL.
The curriculum includes the study of works originally written in the target language (e.g., English literature for English A, French literature for French A) as well as significant world literary works translated into that language. This combination aims to develop diverse appreciation and intercultural analysis and comparison skills.
Assessment comprises final examinations (Paper 1: Analysis of an unseen literary passage; Paper 2: Comparative essay based on works studied in the course) and the Internal Assessment (IA), which is an Individual Oral (IO). In the IO, students analyze two works (one original and one in translation) through the lens of a global issue. HL students also complete the HL Essay.
