Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About

IB History

IB History is not limited to one country or region. The curriculum focuses on world history, particularly from the 18th to the 21st century, through global themes and in-depth study options covering various regions (e.g., Europe, the Americas, Asia, etc.). The approach is comparative and multi-perspective.
Both SL and HL cover World History topics and undertake the Internal Assessment (IA – Historical Investigation). However, HL students must also study an in-depth regional option (e.g., History of Europe), which requires more detailed knowledge and deeper analytical skills. Consequently, the HL final exam includes Paper 3, focusing on this specialized content.
Key skills include: extensive reading comprehension, critical analysis and evaluation of historical sources (primary and secondary) based on OPCVL (Origin, Purpose, Value, Limitations), critical thinking to consider different historical interpretations, and rigorous, structured, evidence-based academic essay writing.
The IA in IB History is a "Historical Investigation." Students must formulate a specific historical research question, find and select appropriate sources, critically analyze those sources, evaluate different perspectives on the issue, and finally present their research findings as an academic paper (approximately 2200 words).
IB History exceptionally develops analytical skills, independent research, critical thinking, and clear, persuasive writing abilities. This provides a strong foundation for many university subjects such as History, Law, International Relations, Political Science, Social Sciences, Anthropology, Journalism, Communications, and even fields like Business or Diplomacy, where contextual analysis and argumentation are crucial.
