GRE Quantitative Reasoning

Learn About GRE Quantitative Reasoning

The Quantitative Reasoning section is one of the three core sections of the GRE General Test. It is designed to measure your ability to understand, interpret, and analyze quantitative information, solve problems using mathematical models, and apply fundamental concepts from Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Data Analysis.

Importantly, this is a reasoning test, not just a test of math knowledge. The test is computer-based and section-level adaptive, meaning your performance on the first Quantitative section will determine the difficulty level of the second section.

Frequently Asked Questions About

GRE Quantitative Reasoning

While the core math concepts (like algebra and geometry) are similar to high school level, GRE questions require a higher level of reasoning and problem-solving. The question formats, especially Quantitative Comparison, are unique to the GRE.
The GRE adapts at the section level. Your performance on the first Quantitative section determines the difficulty (and therefore the potential score range) of the second Quantitative section you receive.
Yes, an on-screen calculator with basic functions is provided. However, over-reliance on the calculator can slow you down. The test is designed to reward strong mental math skills and logical reasoning.
Our program focuses on three key areas: 1) Thorough review of all core math concepts. 2) Intensive training on targeted strategies for each question type, especially Quantitative Comparison and Data Interpretation. 3) Timed practice to build speed, accuracy, and strategic decision-making skills.
The GRE uses a 130–170 scale. For competitive graduate programs in STEM, engineering, or business, scores 165 and above are considered very strong. For other programs, scores above 160 are generally considered solid benchmarks.
