GRE Analytical Writing Assessment

Learn About GRE Verbal Reasoning

The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) is one of the three core sections of the GRE General Test. Its purpose is not to test specific subject knowledge but to measure your ability to think critically, present and defend complex ideas, and maintain a coherent, focused discussion in written form.

In the latest version of the GRE, this section consists of a single 30-minute essay, called “Analyze an Issue.” In this task, you must present your perspective and construct a persuasive argument on a given topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About

GRE Analytical Writing Assessment

The most significant change is the removal of the “Analyze an Argument” essay. The test now includes only one essay task, the “Analyze an Issue”, to be completed in 30 minutes.
The essay is scored on a 0 to 6 scale, in 0.5-point increments. Your final score is the average of two evaluations: one by a human rater and one by ETS’s automated scoring system (e-rater®).
No. The “Analyze an Issue” task assesses your critical thinking and writing skills, not specific knowledge about a topic. You are expected to draw upon general knowledge and personal experience to form and defend your argument.
Our teachers guide you through a systematic approach: quickly decoding any given prompt, brainstorming relevant examples, creating a solid outline in minutes, and structuring a high-scoring essay. We provide intensive practice with official GRE topics and give detailed feedback on your writing to refine your skills.
A score of 4.5 or higher is generally competitive for most graduate programs. A score of 5.0 or above places you in the top percentile and is considered excellent, especially for programs that emphasize writing skills, such as humanities or law.
Tuition depends on the number of study hours and the support level you choose. For a detailed quote, please contact Intertu Education’s advisory team directly.
