Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About

Cambridge Primary Checkpoint Mathematics

This is a standardized test from Cambridge Assessment International Education, used to assess students' Mathematics competency at the end of the Primary education stage (usually at the end of Grade 5 or 6). This examination provides an overview of a student's strengths and weaknesses and serves as an important foundation for the Lower Secondary level.
The exam typically consists of two written papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), covering the main areas of the curriculum such as Number, Geometry, Measure, and Handling Data. One of the two papers may be non-calculator to assess students' mental math and number sense.
This is a common concern. However, the language in the Checkpoint Math exam is generally clear and academically focused. At Intertu, we apply an integrated teaching method that helps students learn mathematical concepts while simultaneously becoming familiar with and proficient in the necessary English terminology, turning language into a supportive tool rather than a barrier.
Besides computational accuracy, the most important skill is "mathematical thinking". This is the ability to understand and apply learned concepts to solve novel problems, a skill that Cambridge particularly emphasizes.
The Primary Checkpoint builds an extremely solid foundation of knowledge and skills that are directly relevant to the IGCSE program. A student with good results in this exam will typically have a much easier and more confident transition to the secondary level.
We apply a personalized pathway, starting with a competency assessment to identify the student's weaknesses. From there, the teacher will focus on consolidating foundational knowledge, use visual and dynamic teaching methods, and provide students with regular practice on various question types from past papers to build confidence and test-taking skills.
