ACT Writing

Learn About ACT Writing

The Writing section is the optional component of the ACT, designed to measure writing skills typically taught in high school and foundational college-level composition courses. The test provides a short passage describing a complex issue and presents three different perspectives on that issue.
Your task is to write a persuasive essay in 40 minutes, in which you must develop your own viewpoint, analyze the relationship between your perspective and the three provided, and support your ideas with logical reasoning and specific examples.

Frequently Asked Questions About

ACT Writing

The ACT Writing section is optional. However, some universities, especially highly competitive ones, require or recommend submitting a Writing score. Taking this section is a great way to showcase your writing and analytical skills to admissions committees. We recommend checking the specific requirements of the universities you are applying to.
Two graders evaluate your essay on a 1–6 scale across four domains: Ideas and Analysis, Development and Support, Organization, and Language Use. Your final score is the average of the two graders’ scores, ranging from 2 to 12.
No, you are encouraged to develop your own viewpoint. You may agree with one perspective, synthesize elements from multiple perspectives, or present a completely unique viewpoint. The key is to analyze the relationship between your own perspective and the provided ones.
Our teachers provide a systematic approach to mastering ACT Writing: how to quickly analyze the prompt and three perspectives, brainstorming and outlining strategies for a strong argument, structuring the essay for clarity and maximum impact, and time management techniques to complete a well-rounded essay within the 40-minute limit.
A score of 8 or higher is generally considered competitive and above average. A score of 10 or higher is excellent and serves as a strong point in your college application.
Tuition depends on the total number of study hours and the level of support service (Standard, Premium, Platinum) you choose. For a detailed quote, please contact Intertu Education’s advisory team directly.
