Language B is designed for students learning the language as a foreign language who already have a certain foundation (typically 2-5 years of prior learning). It differs from Language A (for native speakers or equivalent proficiency, focusing on literature and advanced language study) and Ab Initio (for complete beginners in that language).
Both SL and HL aim to develop communication proficiency and intercultural understanding through 5 core themes. However, HL requires a higher level of language proficiency, demonstrated by students having to read and analyze two literary works written in the target language. The demands for complexity and depth in HL's skills assessments (especially Speaking and Writing) are also higher than in SL.

The main Internal Assessment (IA) for Language B is an Individual Oral exam. In this assessment, students will present on a visual stimulus (usually an image) related to one of the studied themes and the culture of the language-speaking community, followed by a deeper discussion with the teacher. (Note: Always check the latest IBO guide for assessment structure).
Improvement requires consistent and varied practice. Actively practice all four skills, especially Speaking and Writing, both in and out of class. Regularly expose yourself to the language through authentic resources (films, music, books, news, etc.).
