IB Design Technology

Learn About The Subject

IB Design Technology (DT) is a practical, inquiry-based subject focusing on the creative design process to solve real-world problems and meet user needs. Students take on the role of designers, combining critical thinking and practical skills to investigate the optimal balance between aesthetic form, functional utility, material selection, and manufacturing processes. The goal is to create effective and meaningful product/system solutions.

While drawing skills can be an advantage, they are not the sole mandatory factor. More importantly, the subject requires logical design thinking, the ability to creatively solve problems, and the skill to materialize ideas through various means (models, technical drawings, CAD, etc.). Intertu will support you in developing these necessary skills throughout the course.
Both levels share core content on design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes. However, the HL level delves deeper into complex theoretical aspects such as User-centred design, Sustainability, Innovation and markets, and Commercial production. The Internal Assessment (IA) at HL also demands a greater scope and complexity.
IA projects in IB DT are highly diverse and practical. Students independently identify a specific real-world problem or need and develop a complete design solution to address it. Projects can include designing consumer products, furniture, assistive technology solutions, or improving existing systems. This process involves research, ideation, design development, prototyping, and evaluation.
Teachers at Intertu provide detailed guidance on the entire design process according to IB standards, from problem identification, research, and idea development, to prototyping techniques, using CAD software (if relevant), and effectively managing and presenting the IA project. We focus on developing your thinking, skills, and methodology so you can confidently undertake your project.
IB Design Technology strongly develops students' creative thinking, complex problem-solving skills, practical abilities, project management, and understanding of the relationship between design and technology, business, and society. These qualities and skills are highly valued by leading universities, especially in fields such as Engineering, Architecture, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Business, and many other related areas.
