GED English (RLA)

Learn About GED English (RLA)

The GED Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) test, also known as GED English, is one of the four required exams for earning the GED credential. This section integrates language skills and reading comprehension into a single test, measuring your ability to understand, analyze, and build arguments based on written texts. You will be assessed on three core skills:
1. Understanding the meaning of texts.
2. Identifying and constructing arguments.
3. Using correct grammar and standard English conventions.

The exam includes multiple-choice questions based on passages (both literary and non-fiction) and a key 45-minute writing section called the Extended Response.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About

GED English (RLA)

No, there are no questions that only test vocabulary in isolation. However, a strong academic vocabulary is essential for understanding passages and crafting a sophisticated essay.
You will be given two short passages with opposing viewpoints on a topic. Your task is to analyze both arguments and determine which one is better supported, using evidence from the texts to back up your position.
While general reading is always helpful for improving comprehension and vocabulary, the most effective preparation is practicing with passages similar to those found on the GED and learning strategies for each question type.
Our teachers teach a step-by-step approach, including how to quickly analyze passages, create a clear outline, structure your argument with evidence, and manage your time effectively within the 45-minute limit.
The minimum passing score for each GED subject, including RLA, is 145 out of 200.
Tuition depends on the number of study hours and the support level you choose (Standard, Premium, or Platinum). For a detailed quote, please contact the Intertu advisory team directly.
