ACT English

Learn About ACT English

The English section is the first of the four main multiple-choice sections on the ACT. It is designed to measure a student’s understanding of standard written English rules (grammar, usage, mechanics) and rhetorical skills. The section includes 75 questions in 45 minutes, based on five essays or passages with underlined portions.

The questions do not test vocabulary or spelling; instead, they assess your ability to edit and revise text in real-world contexts. The core skill areas evaluated are: Knowledge of Language, Standard English Conventions, and Production of Writing.

It depends on the question type.
For questions focused on specific underlined portions (grammar, punctuation), you usually only need to read that sentence.
For big-picture rhetorical questions, you’ll need to understand the surrounding context or the entire passage.
Our instructors teach when to skim and when to read carefully for maximum efficiency.
Yes. A strong understanding of commonly tested grammar and punctuation rules is essential for success. The ACT is highly consistent in the types of errors it presents.
We offer a systematic review program covering all grammar and punctuation rules tested on the ACT. Then, we provide targeted practice exercises to help you master each concept, along with timed full-length practice tests to build speed and endurance for the 75-question “marathon.”
Scores range from 1 to 36.
For top universities, especially in humanities or communications, a score of 30 or higher is very competitive.
For most selective schools, a high 20s score (e.g., 27+) is a solid target.
