Frequently Asked Questions About

Key Stage 3 English

This is the English program under the National Curriculum for England for students aged 11-14 (equivalent to Years 7, 8, and 9). This program serves as a direct foundation for the IGCSE/GCSE examinations in English Language and Literature.
Studying Shakespeare is a core part of the English curriculum because it helps students develop sophisticated analytical skills, the ability to appreciate complex language, and an understanding of universal, global themes about humanity.
Key Stage 3 shifts the focus from reading comprehension to critical analysis. Students are expected to analyze how writers use language to create effects and to form their own interpretations and viewpoints, a significantly more advanced requirement than at the Primary level.
With our 1-on-1 method, we focus on guiding your child through the entire writing process. The teacher will teach them how to build a strong thesis, how to structure an analytical paragraph (using methods like P.E.E.L), how to select relevant evidence, and how to write coherently and persuasively.
P.E.E.L (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) is one of the most common structures for writing an analytical paragraph. It helps students present their ideas clearly: state the point (Point), provide evidence (Evidence), explain and analyze that evidence (Explanation), and link it back to the main question (Link). At Intertu, we help students master academic frameworks like this.
The skills developed in Key Stage 3 – such as the ability to analyze unseen texts, write structured essays, and understand literary devices – are the exact core and mandatory skills needed to succeed in both IGCSE English Language and IGCSE English Literature.
